Why regular confined space training is vital
Recently, members of the SA Safety confined space team completed 3 days of training to update their City & Guilds 6160-03, 6160-04, and 6160-08 qualifications, focusing on the practical rescue techniques needed in high-risk confined space environments.
Refresher training to maintain core Competencies
Rescue training is most effective when it mirrors real working conditions as closely as possible.
During these refresher sessions, members of the Rescue Team carried out rescue scenarios in realistic conditions in the tunnels. This allowed the team to rehearse the process for the safe recovery of an injured casualty from a confined space including:
-
Casualty assessment and stabilisation
-
Casualty extraction from restricted spaces
-
Working in a confined space using breathing apparatus
-
Communication and coordination between rescue team members
Did you know?
Confined space rescues often require teams to work in restricted environments with limited visibility while wearing breathing apparatus and coordinating complex casualty extraction techniques.
Rescue Scenarios in Realistic conditions
This 3 day training encompassed a range of training scenarios, all carefully designed to allow the team to practice the complex coordination required in confined space rescue operations. Space restrictions, limited visibility, and environmental hazards which can make even simple tasks challenging can all replicated in the training rig.
Although rescue situations are uncommon, the skills required to perform them safely are highly specialised.
Regular refresher training gives teams the opportunity to:
-
revisit core rescue techniques
-
practise low-frequency but high-consequence scenarios
-
familiarise themselves with new or updated rescue equipment
-
refine teamwork and communication under pressure
Training in controlled conditions helps ensure that when a real incident occurs, the response is instinctive, coordinated and safe.
Confident, competent, and ready to respond
Confined space work is constantly evolving, with new equipment, procedures and safety standards shaping how teams operate.
By investing in ongoing confined space rescue training we ensure that our team remain competent, confident and ready to respond when required.
For specialist confined space teams, regular training isn’t just a requirement — it’s an essential part of maintaining operational readiness in some of the most challenging working environments.
