About The City & Guilds 6160-09 Course

This Level 2 City & Guilds 6160-09 Confined Space training course covers the roles of those who work within medium risk confined spaces, or act as the entry controller or ‘top person’. 

Over two days at our Devon training centre, you’ll cover the duties of an entry controller, pre-entry procedures, preparing to work safely, using equipment and tools safely, entry into and exit from the medium risk confined space, maintaining communications, and initiating and following emergency arrangements.

This is an in-person course, held at our training facility at South Brent, in Devon.  Course fee: £385 + VAT per person.

Who is it for?

This course is designed for anyone acting as the entry controller/top person who controls entry and arrangements for medium risk confined spaces and for people who work within them. 

The course covers Medium risk confined spaces such as sewers, tanks, chambers and vessels, along with the equipment and procedures needed to enter and work in them safely.

Good to know:  

 This course aims to reflect the national occupational standard for controlling entry and arrangements at a confined space.  The training covers both water and non-water industry areas.

The City & Guilds Training Scheme 6160 is the Water Industry Standard.  All water companies participated in the formulation of this training scheme to ensure that training quality is consistent and nationally accepted.

Course structure

The City & Guilds 6160-09 comprises 2 days, with a combination of  theory and practice.  Full attendance on all days is compulsory to successfully complete the course. 

Assessment is through a combination of a practical observation and a written test.

How long is the 6160-09 course?

This City & Guilds L2 6160-09 confined space course is a 2 day in-person course. 

Course timings may vary, and will be confirmed in your joining instructions.

What's included in the price?

All learners who successfully complete the practical and written test will receive a City & Guilds 6160-09 Award in Entrant and Entry Controller for Confined Spaces (Medium Risk).

During the course we provide a delicious lunch, and you’ll have access to hot and cold drinks throughout.

Do I need any experience for this course?

No previous confined space experience or academic qualifications are required to take this City & Guilds 6160-09 course.  You will be expected to have suitable English literacy skills to complete the written and verbal assessments.

What do I need to bring?

Clothing: Please wear clean and appropriate clothing for the classroom and bring suitable PPE for practical activities within confined spaces. Please note: for breathing apparatus all learners will need to be clean shaven where the mask touches.

ID: Bring a valid photographic ID (such as a passport or driving licence), which is required for registration.

Extras: Don’t forget to bring any personal medication, a water bottle, and pen and paper. 

Are there any age or health requirements?

To attend this course you must be at least 18, in good general health and physically fit.

Candidates must not exceed the 140kg (22 stones) weight limit of the fall protection equipment used. 

For wearing breathing apparatus, you must be clean shaven where the mask seals.

Where does the training take place?

Confined space courses take place in our fully-equipped training suite, where you’ll gain practical experience in a range of realistic scenarios.

The centre is in South Brent, Devon, conveniently located just off the A38.

How long does the 6160-09 qualification last?

Once you have completed the course and passed all assessments, the 6160-09 L2 Award in Entrant and Entry Controller for Medium Risk Confined Spaces qualification is valid for 3 years.
